Memories of the Cayman Islands Jazz Fest, Pt. 4
By Ronda Racha Penrice
Breakfast at the Cayman fave Cimboco hit the spot. Yes, it was time to swim with the stingrays at Stingray City but not for me. Hello? Didn’t a stingray kill Steve Irwin? It’s not the same, I was told. Our Red Sail Sports crew folks were great and this was clearly the “in” thing because our boat was packed. Still, I wasn’t planning on going in but the water was beautiful and the stingrays looked friendly (pictured). I just had to do it. It wasn’t so bad—actually, I highly recommend it. But snorkeling to the coral reef? Maybe next trip.
Before the show, we ate dinner with our British friends at the Ritz-Carlton’s elegantly fun restaurant Periwinkle. Appetizers included tasty bruschetta and some divine calamari. I chose the gamberi (grilled shrimp pizza) for dinner and it was too delish. We even sipped a little prosecco. For the beer fanatics, Menabrea from Italy is a new find you might want to check out. Food & Beverage Manager Peter Frascarelli is an Italian, by way of New York, and discovered the beer on one of his visits. Caybrew, an eco-friendly beer, is the national pride, but Menabrea was our group’s beer of choice.
I swear every person on the Island was at Jazz Fest! Local talent Ricco Ebanks, a 15-year-old singer, definitely made his country proud. Alicia Keys’ backup singer Jermaine Paul serenaded the ladies. Luckily, we found spots in front of the stage; otherwise, we would have had to catch it on the big screens. Rocking tight jeans, a tiny vest, and high-heel shoes, Ms. Keys was sexier and more active than in years past, as she bounced from the piano to center stage. The hits were plentiful and she even shared new material. But she acted as if she was done without singing “Empire State of Mind,” which just had to be the finale. With no Jay-Z, I was skeptical, but her more musical version worked. I had to hand it to Ms. Keys—she did her thing!
I guess I should mention seeing Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Claudia Jordan, and Datari throughout the weekend. I even spied Terrence in the Westin with his three adorable kids. Actually, he, Alicia Keys, and Mike Phillips were all on my flight back to Atlanta.
Leaving paradise wasn’t easy but watch out, Jazz Fest, I will be back.
