We Fly High
By Michael A. Gonzales Photography by Keith Major Most travel buffs would agree: College friends Andrea Adams and Teri Johnson, graduates of Florida A&M University, came up with a brilliant idea for a gig. Their multimedia production house TravelGirls combines their love of jet-setting with a desire to school consumers, especially those of color, on the thrill of travel. Adams and Johnson supply video of their adventures in faraway places to various online outlets that include sundancechannel.com, AOL Black Voices, and their own Web site, TravelGirlsTV.com. The idea sprang out of the mutual joy the two pals found living in separate European cities while working on their M.B.A.’s. “We’ve shown footage of us partying on yachts in Croatia, island hopping in Greece, and lounging on the beach in Brazil,” says Johnson (pictured left). “However, there’s much more to being an international traveler than just pretty boats and endless partying,” adds Adams. We caught up with the ladies at the Sundance Film Festival, where they were preparing for a day of events and celebrity interviews. “Our main goal is to inspire people to explore life abroad,” says Adams. “We love to learn about different languages and to study the ways of life of the places we visit. We want to show how experiencing other cultures can broaden your life.” Johnson, who’s also a filmmaker (she’s currently in postproduction of her first feature-length film, Hey Diddle Diddle), and Adams share production and marketing duties for their burgeoning enterprise. And, in the coming year, TravelGirls hopes to expand its media presence with podcasts, live remotes, television, and an online social network. “Right now, advertisers are putting more money into online spaces,” Adams says. “Still, when you’re following a passion, as we are, it’s not just about the dollars.”
