New author is “Pretty Hot”By Toccara Castleman They say beauty is only skin deep, so luckily Alicia Marie Rivers is pretty right down to the bone. The author, television personality, self-esteem coach, and Jolie magazine creator recently penned her first book, Pretty Thoughts of a Hot Chick: Foxy Little Notions for Our Minds, Bodies and Souls! And while the title may lead one to conjure up vapid notions about who she is, guess again.
A self-described “goof ball,” the fried-Spam-sandwich-lovin' former Prince aficionado could care less what anyone thinks about her.
“I was an avid follower [of Prince]. I had the knee-high boots, the mini dresses—the whole nine,” says Rivers with a laugh. “And yeah, the other girls might have made fun of me, but I didn’t give a damn what they thought. I’ve always had my own mind and followed my own beat.”
Little has changed since her Purple Rain days. Rivers is clearly still confident and comfortable in her own skin. But even pretty girls have ugly days too: After enduring a devastating breakup that almost destroyed her self-esteem, she recalls that she barely recognized herself in the mirror.
Yet instead of wallowing in sorrow, Rivers came up with a series of “foxy little notions” to serve as daily reminders to all women that nothing should ever compromise their dignity and self-worth.
“I thought to myself, How many times have you gone to a friend for advice and they spark something in you with a memorable quote?” says Rivers. “I wanted my book to be filled with moments like that.”
With her broken heart fully mended, the renaissance woman is taking a page from her own text and “being exactly who she thinks she is”—fabulous. Rivers is working on a second book and developing a new Web site that will feature snippets of all things trendy. At best guess, it’ll be hot, truly the only way a chick like Rivers knows how to be.
