Paul McCartney was once quoted as saying “Fela Kuti's band is the best band I've ever seen.” He’s not alone in his opinion. Nigerian-born musician and composer Fela Kuti is regarded as both the pioneer of Afrobeat music and one of the world’s most influential musicians. Now, his music will be exposed to a new audience via the world of theater.
Fela!, a new musical based on the life and music of iconic African composer & performer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti will begin previews for an off-Broadway run on July 29. In this musical, directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones audiences are welcomed into the extravagant, decadent, and rebellious world of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Using his pioneering music (a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies), Fela! explores Kuti's controversial life as artist, political activist and revolutionary musician. Featuring many of Fela Kuti's most captivating songs and Bill T. Jones’s imaginative staging, this show promises to be a provocative hybrid of concert, dance, and musical theater.
Kuti’s rousing music will performed live onstage by Antibalas and other members of the New York Afrobeat community.
Fela! will play Off-Broadway at 37 Arts from July 29 to September 21 (official opening, September 4). For more information, please visit: 37arts.net.
